Leader Introduces SMPTE ST 2110 Video Primers

Leader Electronics adds to its range of training resources with the release of three video primers explaining the SMPTE ST 2110 Professional Media Over Managed IP Networks suite of standards.

  1. Video primer: An Introduction to ST 2110-20 (6 minutes).
  2. Video primer: An Introduction to SMPTE ST 2110-10 System Timing (22 minutes).
  3. Video primer: SMPTE ST 2110 Professional Media Over IP (5 minutes).

"The advantages of progressing from SDI to IP connectivity are comparable with those gained when the broadcast media industry moved from video tape to file-based content delivery," says Kevin Salvidge, Leader's European Development Manager. "That transition started slowly but gathered serious momentum 20 years ago. The adoption of IP broadcast interfacing is now well under way with the industry currently in an SDI/IP hybrid phase. A key advantage of IP is in managing intra-facility traffic. Another is in delivering content from offsite locations such as sports venues into remote production control facilities. Big savings can be made through the use of commercial off-the-shelf IT equipment and standard IP networking.

"The primers also cover the test and measurement aspect of IP signal measurement, both in an IP-only and SDI/IP context. The huge installed base of SDI equipment looks set to co-exist with IP for many more years. Leader's LV5600 waveform monitor and its LV7600 1 RU rasterising equivalent provide all the tools needed to operate in a hybrid SDI/IP environment.

"Leader has always taken its educational role seriously, right back to the pre-digital era, and is building up a reference archive which can be accessed easily by anyone needing to study the technical aspects of video, audio and related data monitoring, and their relevance to creative program production. PDF documentation based on each primer will be available on request so that viewers have a tangible copy of relevant diagrams and supporting graphics.

"We have also archived a multi-company panel session on The Future of Live Remote Production (63 minutes) with Gerard Phillips and Robert Welch of Arista, Prinyar Boon of PHABRIX, Simen Frostad of Bridge Technologies and Steve Holmes of Leader discussing SMPTE 2110 and how it is influencing the future of live remote production."

All are freely accessible online at Leader Europe YouTube Channel.
